In the midst of the Bryan-McKinley presidential contest of 1896 the famous Kansas newspaperman William Alan White wrote an editorial entitled: “What’s the Matter with Kansas” in which he denounced the state’s political leaders for the way that they were running the state. In 2004 political author Thomas Franks published a book with the title “What’s the Matter with Kansas”—he too denounced the current political leadership of the state.
