The University of Saint Mary ended football season with a win on Saturday afternoon, besting Tabor College 48-34 to finish the year 3-7. After the Blue Jays scored first and the two teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half, the Spires took a 21-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. USM took control of the game from there though, when they scored on each of their three third-quarter possessions and limited Tabor to just 21 total yards in their first two offensive attempts in the second half.
Taking the momentum in the second half, USM head coach Lance Hinson said, was a matter of the Spires fixing a few minor mistakes.
“We received to start the second half and we knew it would be a good opportunity for us to get seven and we did that,” Hinson said. “We knew coming into this game that Tabor was going to do one of two things. They’d either come in here and fold the tent because the coach was fired on Wednesday or they’d play real hard for him. They came out and played with a lot of fire, played well and did some things that they hadn’t done all year. They had a good scheme coming in against us. We went in (to the locker room at halftime) and said we weren’t going to try to make too many adjustments we were just going to get a little better.”
