  • A preliminary hearing has been set for a former Pleasant Ridge High School teacher who is accused of having sexual relations with a student.
Shannon Young, 36, Lansing, appeared Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court with her attorney, Deb Snider.
Snider said her client waived reading of the charges. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 20.
Young is charged with three counts of unlawful sexual relations. She is accused of having  consensual sexual relations with a 17-year-old boy. The crimes are alleged to have occurred between Aug. 1 and June 2.
The boy identified as the victim was of the legal age of consent for Kansas. But teachers are still prohibited by law from having sexual relations with students at their schools.
Young, who has been released on bond, taught at Pleasant Ridge High School during the 2009-2010 school year. She also was a volleyball coach.
As a condition of her bond, Young has been ordered to have no contact with the boy. In court Wednesday, Deputy County Attorney John Bryant asked the judge to reiterate that Young also is barred from using a third party to contact the boy.
District Judge Gunnar Sundby noted the sentence for unlawful sexual relations is considered to be “presumptive probation.” He said the prospect of probation could be fouled up if Young has contact with the boy while on bond.
“Judge there will be no contact,” Snider said.
Evidence will be presented during the preliminary hearing and the judge will determine if the case against Young should proceed.
