An investigative Article 32 hearing for a U.S. Army sergeant accused in the death of five U.S. soldiers and attempted death of two more will begin Monday at Fort Leavenworth.
Sgt. John M. Russell is charged with five counts of premeditated murder, two counts of premeditated attempted murder and one count assault in connection to a May 11, 2009, incident at or near Camp Liberty, Iraq. He is currently in pre-trial confinement at the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Fort Leavenworth.
During an Article 32 hearing, comparable to a civilian preliminary hearing or a grand jury, a military investigating officer hears evidence and makes findings and recommendations concerning charges against the accused.
