  • The SCL Health System, founded by a Leavenworth religious community, announced Wednesday plans to move its headquarters from Kansas to Colorado.
The organization said it intends to create 750 new primarily accounting, billing, information systems and system services jobs in the Denver metropolitan area over the next four years, moving from its former headquarters in Lenexa, Kan. Some of those jobs will be relocations from the Kansas location.
The system of hospitals, ambulatory centers, safety-net clinics and one youth home was founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in 1864 when they established Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, a facility that remains part of the system. In September 2011, the SCL community transferred sponsorship of the system to a new entity, Leaven Ministries, to allow lay people to serve as sponsors, though SCL Community Director Sister Maureen Hall still serves on the health system’s board of directors in addition to one other member of the community.
In addition to Kansas, the SCL Health System also has facilities in Montana, California and Colorado.
“Since 1873, when the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth first opened Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, we have been committed to Colorado and its communities,” Michael Slubowski, president and chief executive officer of SCL Health System, said in a statement on the move. “We are pleased to increase our presence in a state that is such a significant part of our history. Colorado is a welcoming environment for business and is known for its commitment to improving the health of its residents. That commitment to health matches our mission.”
The decision to move, Slubowski said, was a strategic one given the location of its facilities.
“This move gives our health system closer proximity to the hospitals and clinics we operate in the western United States, and the presence of Denver International Airport allows for frequent and easy travel to and from our care sites,” he said.
