    James H. Smith 79, Leavenworth, Kan. went to his heavenly home May 4, 2012.
    Jim as friends and family knew him, had been in failing health this past year. He had the privilege of staying at home surrounded by his family and friends all through his illness.
    Jim was born in Whittemore, Ia., October 17, 1932 the son of Frank and Helen (Brandt) Smith (now deceased).
    He grew up in a loving family of nine children. Due to a large family, Jim only finished the eight grade of school. He took a farming job to help his Dad to support the family.
    In 1953 Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry with whom he served during the Korean War. While in the Service he suffered several ankle injuries causing him to be discharged for disability. Upon discharge he worked several years in the Iowa Road Department; then later in various construction jobs.
    Jim married Judy Motley August 11, 1972 in Platte City, Mo.
    Jim began employment at Kaaz Construction Company in 1973 and retired as a plasterer in 1993. He made many friends in the construction field. All three of his sons have followed in his footsteps.
    Jim was an avid outdoorsman; he loved to fish, an go on an occasional deer hunting trip and many times went rabbit hunting with Judy's Dad, which was a “blast” for both of them.
    Jim is survived by his wife Judy of the home, five children, Kelley Ward, Fla., Dana (Kevin) Hanson, Wash., Tracy Motley, N.C., Tim (Kimberly) Motley, Lansing and Brent (Kathleen) Motley,  Leavenworth, ten grandchildren, Jacque Smith, Briana Ward, Cody and Jacob Motley, Jenna and Julia Motley, Amber Ray and Kyle Motley, Raven Wardlow and Nicholas DePriest, three great grand children, Sethaniel and Madison Smith and Liam Ray, two brothers, Gerald (Phyllis) Smith and Francis (Betty) Smith, two sisters, Margaret (Larry) Kelley, Judy (Larry) Evers, two step-brothers, William and Robert Clawson.
    Jim was preceded in death by one infant son, Jamie Smith, his brother Lloyd Smith and three sisters, Fern Gronbach, Beverly Mueller and Carolyn Finney.
    A Celebration of Life visitation will be held Friday, May 11, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Military honors will be at a later date.
    In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Davis Funeral Chapel.
