  • Name:  Lance Hinson
Coaching position: Head football coach and assistant athletic director at the University of Saint Mary
    Years as coach: Seven seasons
Why did you get into coaching? For the love of the game. When my playing days came to an end and I was not a part of a team for a year, I knew I had to get back into the game. Since I couldn’t play, the next best thing was to coach.
What are you best memories of coaching so far? I am not sure if I can pinpoint just one memory, but the win at home against Friends University when they were ranked no. 16 in the nation in 2010. We were playing with primarily a freshmen and sophomore team, so it’s right up there.
Some of the best memories come off the field as well, like seeing your players cross the stage and get their diploma, or getting a message from a former player saying they got the job they wanted.
What advice do you have for future coaches? Be yourself. Do not try to be someone you are not, your players will see right through you. Also, control the “controllables” — try not to control things you can’t and work on controlling things you can.
