Betty J. (Haggerty) Weinberg, 86, passed away Friday, July 20, 2012, in Leavenworth, surrounded by her children. She was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Frank F. and Anna (Giles) Haggerty.
On June 12, 1969, she married the love of her life, Jim Weinberg in Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank Haggerty and Anna Lawrey; her son, Mark Weinberg; brother, Frank A. Haggerty; and sister, Mary Iris Peterson.
Betty graduated form Shawnee Mission Rural High School in Mission, Kan., where she participated in the school band as a majorette. She worked in banking and auto parts. She was an accomplished bowler having won several team championships. She was active in Veterans activities, calling bingo, aiding veterans at the Leavenworth VA and with the VFW auxiliary. Betty was a staunch follower of the hometown Kansas City Athletics and Kansas City Royals following their progress whenever possible. She later becoming a recreational golfer with her husband Jim.
She leaves behind her children, John (Nancy) Shepherd of Green Bay, Wis., Joyce Templeton of Blue Springs, Mo, Kathy (Tony) Guenther of Lansing, Kan. and Carrie (John) Waun of Leavenworth; six grandchildren, Chris (Kristi) Layden, Melissa Guenther, Matthew (Mindy) Templeton, Scott Templeton, Justin (Bobbie) Guenther and Jessica Mulvaney; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Layden, Jordan and Mikayla Guenther and Kylie Templeton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. following the visitation at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
