A close contest between the LV Diamond Jaxx and Easton Outlaws got out of hand quickly Friday.
Facing off for a chance to play in the American Legion AAA Zone 1 Tournament final tonight at 8 p.m., each club came out swinging. By the end of the three innings, the Outlaws were winning 5-4.
However, a couple fielding errors, some timely hitting and an early Easton ejection led to a 17-7 blowout win for the Jaxx.
Easton will now take on the winner of Friday’s elimination game, Geiger Ready-Mix vs. Blue Valley, today at 4 p.m. The victor gets the final spot in the championship.
In the Jaxx win on Friday, each team plated two runs in the first inning and then a score in the second. LV snatched a one-run advantage in the top of the third, but Easton answered with two of its own for a 5-4 edge.
The game shifted dramatically from there. In the fourth, the Jaxx used timely, two-out hits to get three runs home. Then in the sixth, the same clutch approach paid dividends as the club posted four more scores. During that frame, an Easton player was ejected, leaving just eight Outlaws to finish out the game.
The loss of a man hampered the squad, but never totally finished off the team. The Jaxx did put up two more runs in the seventh and four in the ninth, yet with a man-shy Easton squeezed in sole runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to not get mercy-ruled.
Leading hitters for the Jaxx were Brandon Wilson, who had three RBIs on two doubles, and Carl Richmond, who also collected three RBIs on a single and a double. Easton’s Nate Amos pushed in three RBIs with a double and two singles while Dan Broaddus also pitched in two RBIs.
Robert Young took the pitching result while Sean Spurlock suffered the loss. The results for Geiger vs. Blue Valley were not available before press deadline Friday.
