Fifth Annual Jake Walkup Tribute Baseball Game raises nearly $500 for scholarship fund.
The Lansing High School Alumni finally put one in the win column Sunday, beating the current Lansing Reds 5-4 in the fifth annual Jake Walkup Tribute Baseball Game.
The contest was held to raise funds for the Jake Walkup Scholarship Fund in honor of the former Lansing Red and student, who passed away from a car accident five years ago, took place at Lansing High School.
Walkup’s grandfather, Ed Simons, delivered the pre-game prayer. Simons was also honored by the Lansing American Legion for his continual support of the American Legion program.
To start the contest, the alumni got on the board first when Tom Kohl hit a single, stole second and third and then scurried home on a Corey Frederick's double. The alumni then clipped on two more runs in the top of the third inning.
Alumni starter Marc Spellman was on fire to begin the game. After hitting the first batter, he retired the next eight in a row before walking a Red in the bottom of the third. That runner then advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single to center, the Reds’ first hit of the game.
The Alumni added two more runs in the fifth inning when both Kohl and Smith scored on hits by Frederick and Casey Worral. The Reds answered with two of their own, making the score 5-3.
In the seventh, the Alumni highlight came when 1989 graduate and Kansas City radio personality Scott Parks drew a walk.
"I'd like to announce that the class of '89 has been represented," Parks shouted as he took first base.
Eric Delich began the final frame on the mound for the Alumni, but after getting two quick outs, walked two straight batters. Coupled with a wild pitch, which allowed a Reds runner to hurry home, the game stood at 5-4.
Following a pitching change and a walk, Mike Smith induced a ground ball to third that turned into the final out, giving the Alumni the game.
The biggest win of the night, however, went to the Jake Walkup Scholarship fund, which added almost $500 from the event’s proceeds.
