  • John F. Denney, 93, Leavenworth, KS, went to be with his Savior on Sunday, July 29, 2012 surrounded by loved ones.  John, the first child of John A and Fern (Rodenburg) Denney, was born on December 29, 1918 in rural Leavenworth County.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Reynolds (Babe), George, Bob, and Bill.  Surviving siblings include Harold (Dee) of Colorado Springs, CO; Mildred (Richard) Hambleton of Mesa, AZ; Mary (Ted) Tedder of Columbia, SC; and Don (Eleanor) of Leavenworth, KS.
John married Dorothy L. Wright on April 18, 1942 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Leavenworth.  She preceded him in death on June 1, 2011 after 69 years of marriage.
He attended school in the one room school house on Coffin Road in Salt Creek Valley before attending and graduating from the 8th grade at St. Paul Lutheran School in Leavenworth.
John worked at the Cloverleaf  Dairy, where he met his future wife, Dorothy, and then the VA Center.  John & Dorothy founded J.F. Denney Plumbing & Heating in 1952.  Later they also owned and operated Denney's Bath Boutique at the Leavenworth Landing.
John spent many years giving back to the community.  He served as Chairman of the Leavenworth County Planning Commission; Leavenworth City Commissioner for 8 years with two terms as Mayor; Chairman of the Leavenworth County Commission; Chairman of the Leavenworth Water Department; and as a member of the Board of Directors of several organizations including St. John Hospital.
He loved what he did in retirement - driving cars for several auto dealerships including over 17 years for Zeck Ford.
Perhaps his biggest contribution to the area was his service at Trinity Lutheran Church.  He and Dorothy were charter members of the congregation.  He was instrumental in founding the South Campus Church in Basehor, KS.  Over the years he served in many positions including Board of Elders, Board of Properties, and leadership positions including President.  He was the coffee and doughnut man for Sunday morning for many years.
John is survived by his seven children:  John (Connie); Mike (Marilou) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Greg; Barbara (Rett) Alonzi; Marsha; Julie; and Becky (Brian) Kobler.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren:  Mark (Becky); Martha (Rick) Rude; Matthew; Derek (Colleen); Beth (Travis) Stafford; Jason (Laurie); and Emily (Ross) Germani.  John and Dorothy were affectionately known as Poppa John and Poppa Dot by their 16 great grand children:  Justin and Caleb Denney; Nicholas, Ryan, Faith, and Samantha Brackney; Aaron, Zach, Zoe, and Avery Denney;  Madison Sumner, Kylie Hampton, Carson Stafford, Lilly Denney, Michael Germani and Jordan Long.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law, George Mistler of Leavenworth.
Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2101 Tenth Avenue, on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM.  Funeral services for John will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 9:30AM at Trinity Lutheran Church.  Burial will follow the service at Sunset Memory Gardens.  Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, St Paul Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, Alzheimer's Association, or an organization of the donor's choice. Services are entrusted to the Davis Funeral Chapel.
