  • What a great week of musings. Let’s get started.
We now only have one remaining undefeated team in all of Leavenworth’s adult softball leagues. McCann Plumbing stands at 9-0 in the women’s league with three remaining games. Only two games separate the top three teams in the league.
In the men’s division one, we have a virtual three way tie for first — All Slabbed Up, Butler Muffler and Oak Leaf Pub Hitmen. Division two has three teams — Great Western, Tom’s Country Stampede and 2711 — separated by only one game.
In division three, with three games remaining, Twisted Softball has clinched at least a tie for the league title.
We have a virtual four way tie for second in division three between The Fighting Mongooses, Stepp Painting, Thompson’s Masonry and Northwest Baptist Church.
Explaining the crash rule. A question was raised on the crash rule recently. The interpretation is: If a play is being made at any base, the runner is responsible to avoid contact with the player covering the base.
A player covering a base is defined as any defensive player awaiting a ball in flight from another defensive player. In this situation, the runner must go down (slide) or go around the player covering the base.
If contact is made and the runner has not gone down (slide), the runner is automatically out. By not sliding, the runner, while automatically out, has also placed him/herself in jeopardy of being ejected as well — the severity of the collision is the umpires’ decision to make.
Remember, our program is about safety for all of our participants.
I have extended the sign-up deadline for fall co-ed softball to  5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3. We currently have nine teams participating. That is awesome.
Reminder on Saturday, Aug. 25 the Parks and Recreation will host the first City of Leavenworth Home Run Derby at Cody Park for any softball player registered in the city of Leavenworth summer adult softball leagues.
There will be a $20 entry fee. A player may register to participate in the highest division they are playing in during our summer leagues. We will have three divisions for the men, two for the women.
A home run line will be painted in the outfield for the women.
Two additional points on the Home Run Derby. Sammy Lough provided a good idea for the women’s portion of the derby. The pitcher will pitch from the second base area and the batter will hit from the pitcher’s rubber area. This will put us at about 225 feet to the fence for the women’s portion of the derby.
Ave Ruiz also provided a good safety thought, we will provide a pitcher’s safety screen for the pitcher during the derby.
Page 2 of 2 - We have four sponsors for our First City Home Run Derby. Genesis Health Club of Leavenworth has donated one free month membership to the winner within each division.
Mr. Goodcents has donated a $25 gift card to the winner of each division. Pfrimmer Chiropractic has donated a massage to each finalist upon the completion of their 35th pitch. Varsity Sports has donated a $25 gift certificate to the winner of each division.
The city of Leavenworth has also donated two tickets to the Bobby Watson Jazz concert on Nov. 17 at the Performing Arts Center at Hollywood Theater to the overall men’s and women’s champion.
I am anxious to announce that Up In Smoke will be offering barbecue for the First City Home Run Derby. All proceeds from the profits from the barbecue will be donated to CASA by Up In Smoke. This is truly becoming a family day out for everyone.
Here is a softball tournament opportunity. The Psychotic Summer Blast will be held at Lyons Park in Lawrence on Aug. 11. It is a men’s and coed tournament with an entry fee of $125 per team. For additional information, contact either Wes Warren (785-331-8677) or Jordan Glenn (913-416-3106).
Coed kickball registration is currently open as well. We will play coed kickball on Fridays at Hawthorn Park on field two. Our league will begin on Friday, Sept. 7.
Finally, remember the goal for all of our programs is that the program policies and procedures are fair for the masses and fun and safe for everyone. Until next week, enjoy your season.
