The votes are in from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic College football nedia day, and if the coaches and media are correct, the University of Saint Mary will finish in the middle of the league’s pack in 2012.
Preseason polls from both the KCAC coaches and media were tabulated on Wednesday, where the Spires placed fourth in the coaches with 60 votes and fifth in the media with 114 votes.
Ottawa University took the top spot in each poll with nine first place votes in the coaches poll, 90 total, and 15 in the media poll, 158 total.
Following Ottawa in the media poll, Friends University edged Bethany College by 11 votes, 130-119, for the No. 2 ranking. Conversely, coaches selected Bethany the No. 2 team over the Falcons by a margin of four votes, 75-71. Friends obtained the final first place votes in both the media poll and the coaches poll.
Rounding out the top five teams in the media poll were No. 4 Kansas Wesleyan University, 60, and No. 5 University of Saint Mary. In the coaches poll, the Spires were selected No. 4 and the Coyotes at No. 5 with 98 selections.
Ten total ballots were cast in the coaches poll with head coaches unable to vote for their teams. Media members, present at Salina Country Club for the Aug. 1 event, cast 16 total votes.
The Spires begin its season on the road Sept. 1 at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
