Benjamin D. (Ben) Phillips, of Leavenworth, Kan., age 80, passed away Sunday morning, August 5, 2012, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.
Ben was born in Leavenworth, Kan. on May 23, 1932, to William N. and Margaret I. (Butler) Phillips who preceded him in death.
Ben's early years were spent in both the Leavenworth and Easton communities.  As a young man he became known in the community as an exceptional salesman in the furniture, automotive and auction fields.  As well, he managed the local Fort Drive Inn Movie Theatre.  Ben also served in the US Army during the Korean conflict.  His greatest passion was the auction business that he built in Leavenworth County and the many friendships that he made as a result.  In the late 70's he and his wife Marie, began a home building business, constructing many homes in the Leavenworth area and while retirement was appealing, he longed to continue building as long as he was able. Ben was a long-time member of the High Prairie Church, a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion, and served as a member of the Easton Cemetery Board for many years.
In the spring of 1957 Ben met and married his wife of 55 years, Marie (Rowland) Phillips.  She survives at the home.  Ben is also survived by daughters Pamela (Alan) Arevalo and Karen (Mike) Pursel, son Bennie (Angela) Phillips II, all of Leavenworth.  As well, he is survived by eight grandchildren; Eric, Marc & Alaina Waller, Garrett and Cooper Phillips, Shelby and Bo Pursel, and Haley Arevalo. He is also survived by two brothers; Dannie (Rhonda) Phillips and Lonnie (Dorothy) Phillips and many nieces and nephews.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Bill (Dorcille) Phillips and Calvin (Wanda) Phillips, and one grandson, Robbie Arevalo.
Visitation will be held at High Prairie Church, 26480 187th street Leavenworth, KS 66048, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 9,   2012.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the church on Friday morning, August 10,   2012.  Graveside services will follow at the Easton cemetery.
The family wishes, that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given in Ben's name to either the Easton Cemetery Association or the High Prairie Church.
