  • Team: Lansing girls’ tennis
Last year’s record: Team record was 47-96.
    Coach: Ed Fenton
    Key returners:
Cheyenne English, senior; singles, 7-18 last year
Alanda Kohl, senior; doubles, 11-14 in 2011
Valyssa Layton, senior; doubles, 8-17 last season
    Newcomers to watch:
    Katie Rathjen, freshman; singles
Team Outlook: STRENGTHS — Experienced depth will be the biggest asset the Lady Lions carry into the 2012 season.
From last year’s squad, 11 players return with six of those being seniors. Needless to say, these players no what to expect heading into varsity competition.
WEAKNESSES — While high school experience is evident, the Lansing team still lacks the club playing background that many of its competitors possess according to Fenton.
Throw in the lack of practice area — the team has only two courts to prepare on — getting everyone the needed amount of reps becomes an obstacle.
In order to combat those problems, the team will need to take advantage of every set possible both at practice and in competitions.
Big games: Baldwin Invitational, Sept. 12; Mill Valley Invite, Sept. 15; Wildcat Invitational in DeSoto, Sept. 22; Topeka West Invite, Sept. 29; Regional tournament, Oct. 6
Coach says: “We have a nice group of returning players with six having experience playing varsity tennis last season. Based on our work this summer, I’m expecting to have 8-10 girls competing for the six varsity spots. As a team, we have the goals of improving on our overall win/loss record, increasing the medal count at tournaments, and qualifying a singles player or doubles team for state this year.”
