Name: Jay Johnston
Coaching position: Leavenworth head wrestling coach
Years as coach: Fifth as head coach; seventh overall
Why did you get into coaching? Because I love this sport and I love teaching kids. I truly believe the sport of wrestling prepares kids for all of life's experiences.
Through this sport I have learned about responsibility, discipline, accountability for actions, leadership and the value of hard work.
The sport changed my life in a dramatically positive way and I believe I was put on this earth to do the same for others.
What are you best memories of coaching so far? The relationships I have built with the great kids and families of this community. Watching kids like Javon Haines, Jesse Colver and Byron Hadfield endure heartbreaking defeat and to use that defeat as motivation to fulfill their dreams and achieve great heights.
There is no better feeling as a coach than watching a young man who has experienced heartbreaking failure, rise up and achieve great success — miracles do happen.
Also, getting to watch young men like Josh Ammel and Nathan Butler turn themselves into great leaders is a great thing for our coaching staff to experience.
What advice do you have for future coaches? Never underestimate the will and spirit of your kids — if they know you love them and believe in them, they can do just about anything.
