  • In impressive fashion Thursday, the Lansing girls’ tennis team ripped through its 2012 season opener like it was Christmas morning.
Led by Cheyenne English, who won her No. 1 singles match 8-4, the Lady Lions dispatched Spring Hill 8-0.
“Really good start,” Lansing coach Ed Fenton said. “I was just looking at the results from last year and I think we won four matches at this duel and we obviously improved on that.”
After English, No. 2 singles Katie Rathjen won 8-2, No. 3 Alanda Kohl was an 8-4 victor and No. 4 Valyssa Layton took her match 8-1. Lansing’s No. 5 singles Savannah Baker won 8-0 and No. 6 Jenna Hinckley downed her Spring Hill opponent 8-1.
“I was pleased with the way we played considering the windy conditions,” Fenton said. “It never fails that the wind eventually stops when we leave. The girls always have to adjust at the beginning and they did a good job.”
In the No. 1 doubles match, English and Rathjen were 8-3 victors, the No. 2 pairing of Kohl and Layton finished with an 8-2 win and the No. 3 duo of Baker and Hinckley won 8-5.
“The match that really impressed me was Cheyenne’s,” the Lansing coach said, “and I think that was one of the best matches she has played considering the conditions.”
The Lady Lions will be back on the courts come Saturday when the team travels for a 9 a.m. meet in Shawnee Heights.
