Name: Rod Briggs
Coaching position: Head boys’ basketball coach at Lansing High School
Years as coach: 23
Why did you get into coaching? My dad was a highly successful high school football coach in Northwest Kansas and I just grew up around whatever sport was in season. He also coached basketball and track. I read the coaching magazines and attended every practice. So I was thinking like a coach from a very early age.
What are your best memories of coaching so far? I have a lot, but winning a state title in 1992 as an assistant at Wichita East High School is one of the most. At Lansing beating Highland Park in the sub-state final in 2011 was also one of my top memories, along with beating KC Washington in the sub-state final in 2009. We hope to make more this season.
What advice do you have for future coaches? Enjoy working with young people and guiding them to become better on and off the field. Work hard and you will be rewarded. Also, realize it is not about you and that if you do things the right way you should never feel bad about a season.
