  • The season has officially sprung for the Leavenworth girls’ tennis team.
On Thursday, the squad started its 2012 schedule with some home cooking as it hosted Shawnee Mission North, Gardner Edgerton and Lawrence. After beating North 3-1 to open the quad, the Lady Pioneers were defeated 4-0 by Gardner and 3-1 by Lawrence.
“Overall, not a bad way to start off the season,” LV coach Shad Langfoss said. “Meagan (Bruckler) played real well and the doubles played well too. I was very, very pleased with our No. 2 doubles.”
Against North, Bruckler won the No. 1 singles match 7-3 while Megan Kelly and Maggie McDonald combined to take the No. 1 doubles match 7-2. Christina Dominique and Sydnie Lundy won the No. 2 doubles match 7-0 and Jailyn Settles lost the No. 2 singles contest 7-3.
Versus Lawrence, Bruckler won 7-5 for the Lady Pioneers’ lone win. Kelly and McDonald lost 7-3, Dominique and Lundy were defeated 7-5 and Settles fell 7-6 (7-5).
Against Gardner, Bruckler was beat 7-0, as was Settles, while Kelly/McDonald were upended 7-4 and Dominique/Lundy just barely lost 7-6 (7-5).
Leavenworth, 1-2, will host Olathe North on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
