  • Since losing its season opener two weeks ago, the University of Saint Mary women’s soccer team has ripped through its competition to the tune of a three-game winning streak.
The most recent victory came Saturday, when the Lady Spires defeated the College of St. Mary 3-2 in its first home game of the season.
“Easily our best performance and total 90-minute performance of the year so far,” USM coach Justin Seever said. “We came out playing well and created some good opportunities. We were pretty stingy defensively also.”
Ivory Baldwin struck first blood for the Lady Spires when she knocked in a goal in the 33rd minute. Minutes later USM gave up a penalty kick to its visitor, leaving the half time score at 1-1. In the second half, Jennifer Nye took over by striking home two goals in the span of 48 seconds.
During the 64th minute, Nye tapped in her first goal to give USM a 2-1 lead. On the proceeding kick-off, the Lady Spires caught their slightly stunned visitors sleeping, allowing Nye to boom another.
“Her size and pace gives people fits,” Seever said of Nye. “She is probably our most dangerous threat going forward and she is producing.”
The College of Saint Mary did score in the 70th minute, but that was it. The Lady Spires, 3-1,  will host Oklahoma Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Thursday.
