  • A lot of progress was made last week by the University of Saint Mary volleyball team.
The team strung together back-to-back victories to push its conference record to 2-2 and inch its overall mark one game below .500. Yet, after taking a few steps forward, this past weekend represented one stride back.
After winning its opening match at the Kansas Wesleyan Tournament, USM lost its next three to finish 1-3 in the competition.
"One thing that we talked about is that we can't keep having this roller coaster type season," Lady Spires coach Sarah Johnson said. "We need to get more consistency and once we do that, I believe we can do great things."
Everything started off well for Saint Mary when the team defeated Peru State College 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 on Friday. But then later that evening the squad lost 25-16, 25-22, 25-12 to Missouri Valley College.
The following day, Avila toppled USM 25-20, 25-13, 25-20 and Saint Gregory's University did the same, 25-18, 25-17, 14-25, 26-24.
"We went into it feeling prepared and a little more hopeful than how we came out of it," Johnson said, "but we are hoping that we learned a lot and can improve from it."
The Lady Spires, 6-9 overall, will host Kansas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. tonight.
