After trailing by 28 points at half Saturday in its home opener, the University of Saint Mary football team put together a valiant comeback over the final two periods of play.
During that span, the Spires racked up 34 points and had a shot at the equalizer late in the fourth, yet failed to capture the elusive score. In the end, USM lost 44-37 to Tabor College, which keeps Saint Mary winless in 2012.
Spires’ quarterback Mike Keese threw for five touchdowns and 448 yards, yet three interceptions to go along with two other USM turnovers hindered the home squad greatly. The Spires will travel to Sterling Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest.
