  • Bernard C. Payeur, 84 of Denison, Kan. passed away September 22, 2012, as the result of a two car accident which also claimed the life of his wife Joanne E. Payeur.
    Joint Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Friday, September 28th, 2012, at St. Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church with Father George Bertles officiating, Co. Road 17 Leavenworth, Kansas for Bernard and Joanne.
    Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, September 27th, 2012, at Belden Larkin Funeral Home, Leavenworth, Kansas with the family present from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and a Rosary at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
    Bernard was born August 29th, 1928, in Leavenworth, Kan. the son of Clovis and Clara (Mertes) Payeur.
    He attended Easton Schools, out of high school he worked and married Mary Lou Steed on August 24, 1951, and then entered the United States Marine Corp. Bernard and Mary spent two years at 29 palms in California before he received an honorable discharge.
    He and Mary returned to Kansas and began a family, they had six children. Bernard worked for Bay State milling company in Leavenworth while maintaining a farm along with his wife and children. Mary passed away September 6th, 1977 after 26 years of marriage. Bernard continued to work for the Bay State Milling Company until the mill in Leavenworth closed in 1981, at that time he transferred to Tempe, Ariz. While living in Tempe, he met Joanne Wright and they were married on May 12, 1989. They stayed in Arizona until Bernard retired in 1991. After retirement, Bernard remained an honorary member of the Association of Operative Millers
    In 1991 Bernard and Joanne purchased a farm in Jefferson County Kansas and built a beautiful life together. Bernard was a farmer for his entire life with the exception of the years that he spent in Arizona. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was active in the Catholic Church. He took great pride in his farm animals, especially his cows and he was an avid gardener. Bernard loved to travel and visited most of the states throughout his life. He loved to spend time with his good friend's playing cards and going out to dinner. Bernard and Joanne will be greatly missed by their beloved dog Skipper, who they referred to as their adopted son.
    Bernard is survived by two sons; Bernard, Jr., and Stephen and his wife Lori of all of Leavenworth; Two daughters; Lisa Brown and her husband Ken of Leavenworth, and Veronica Humes of Weston, Mo.; and a niece who he and Mary raised from a very early age, Annette Grooms and her husband Greg of Springfield, Mo.. Bernard was the grandfather of thirteen children and has five great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by, two daughters; Mary Crum in 2006 and Elizabeth Payeur in 1960, and his sister Anna Everette.

    Joanne was born May 12th, 1935, in Cleveland, OH. the daughter of Millard and Lillian (Lavere) Batson. She graduated from Shaw High School in East Cleveland. She married Charles E. Wright on September 10th, 1955, he preceded her in death in May 9th, 1979. She married Bernard C. Payeur on May 12th, 1989 in Tempe, Ariz.
    Joanne worked for White Motor Company in Cleveland in the payroll department for 20 years until it's closing. She worked for a brief time for an advertising marketing firm in Arizona until Bernard's retirement and moving to Denison, Kan.
    Joanne loved to travel, read, and crochet. She had a very dry sense of humor and loved to laugh. She loved having lighthearted moments with family and friends. Joanne enjoyed her move to Denison and enjoyed sharing many memorable moments with her daughters as she would reflect and talk about the farm life. Joanne and Bernard will be greatly missed by their beloved dog Skipper, who they referred to as their adopted son.
    She is survived by two daughters; Lisa Corrado and her husband Nick of Mentor, OH. and Christine Gulley, Scottsdale, Ariz., a daughter in law; Nancy Wright of Eastlake, OH., six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one brother; Millard Frank Batson, Jr. of Woodburn, Ore., and nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis M. Wright.
