  • The U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth remained on lockdown today as officials investigated a series of incidents from the weekend, a prison spokesman said.
"This is all precautionary," USP spokesman Thomas Sheldrake said of the lockdown.
He said it appeared the lockdown would continue Tuesday.
The lockdown means all inmates are secured in their cells.
The federal prison was placed on lockdown at about 2 p.m. Saturday after three fights occurred in one of the housing units and two large groups assembled in the recreation yard, according to Sheldrake.
He said the incidents were quickly contained. No staff members were injured. A small number of inmates suffered minor injuries, but they did not require outside medical treatment.
Sheldrake said officials will still be gathering intelligence today about what happened. He said at this point it looks like the incidents were isolated.
He said the lockdown status could change Wednesday.
Sheldrake said the lockdown affects only the main prison, which has about 1,850 inmates. The neighboring camp is maintaining normal operations.
Sheldrake said inmates at the main prison are receiving their meals in their cells during the lockdown.
The lockdown impacted visitation at the prison. Sheldrake said visiting generally takes place at the USP Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But visitation has been suspended while the prison is in the lockdown status.
