  • With regional play less than a week away, the Lansing girls' tennis team is catching fire at the perfect time.
After placing third overall at the Topeka West Duels on Saturday, the Lady Lions went 7-1 at Mill Valley on Monday.
"I really liked what I saw at times from our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles today," Lansing coach Ed Fenton said. "Alanda (Kohl) and Valyssa Layton) were able to beat the team that knocked them out last year. We had this date pretty much circled on the calendar as an opportunity at payback."
In No. 1 singles action, Cheyenne English finished 1-1 while No. 2 singles Katie Rathjen went 2-0. The Lady Lions' No. 1 doubles team of Kohl and Layton finished 2-0, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Jenna Hinckley and Savannah Baker.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions at Topeka West was Rathjen, who won first in the No. 2 singles bracket after going 3-1. Third place medals went to No. 3 singles Sydney Chiles, who went 2-2, and the No. 1 doubles pairing of Kohl and Layton. They also finished the day 2-2.
Concluding the Lady Lions medalist were No. 1 singles English, who took fourth after a 2-2 mark, and No. 2 doubles duo of Hinckley and Baker. The team finished 1-3.
Lansing will play at 3:15 p.m. today on the road at Gardner-Edgerton.
    Pioneers, Raiders washed out
Before the Leavenworth and Immaculata girls' tennis teams could wrap up their final meeting of the season Monday, the skies opened up.
Yet though the rain washed out most of the competition, the schools did get in four matches. Of those, the Lady Pioneers walked away with three victories — two in doubles, one singles — while Imac collected a doubles victory.
"We got a little bit of wind, a little bit of rain and a little bit of practice as it was the final match before our regionals," Immaculata coach Manuel Hernandez said.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Leavenworth's Meagan Brocker and Sydnie Lundy edged out Olivia Wilson and Sydney Simek 8-7, 7-5. The No. 2 doubles match was decided by the same score, this time Lady Raiders Liz Lee and Abby Meirose getting the best of Christina Dominquez and Megan Kelly.
The final doubles match saw Leavenworth's Anna Salvatorelli and Jailyn Settles combine to beat Priscilla Hernandez and Elena Nine 8-1. Maggie McDonald beat Nine 8-1 in singles play.
Both teams will now prepare for their regional tournaments on Saturday.
