  • Facing a field of 22 teams at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., the University of Saint Mary men's cross country team walked away with a top ten finish Saturday.
Led by Brooks Ballou, who placed 21st overall, the Spires came in sixth place as a team.
"The men's team ran average today, which cannot happen at big race like Oklahoma State,” USM coach David Dominguez said. “I am still very proud of their effort today."
Following Ballou was Caeser Castillo in 25th, Cameron Avilez took 29th and Nick Haines was 30th. Russel Brown was 52nd and Aaron Potter came in 116th for Saint Mary.
A day earlier, the Lady Spires squad placed 17th at the Emporia State Invitational. Samantha Winter was the top USM runner with a 82nd finish. Other Saint Mary results were Karoline Banasik (92nd), Addieson Rhea (114th), Carolyn Ellis (134th) and Angelia Meyer (142nd).
The Spires' squads will participate in the Haskell Invite this Saturday.
    Schoen sisters lead Leavenworth
With top 15 finishes from Taryn and Madison Schoen, the Leavenworth girls' cross country team won sixth at the Topeka Seaman Invite Saturday.
The sisters placed back-to-back, Taryn in 12th and Madison in 13th, while Jordan Boyce led the Pioneer boys' squad to eighth overall with his 13th place.
“I was so proud of the kids,” LV coach Willis Willmeth said. “Again they ran faster than they have run before. Twenty-six out of 30 had personal records and 25 ran the best time they have ever run. The course was running well, the kids were running and it was exciting.”
The remaining girls' results for Leavenworth included: Lindi Young (30th), Briana Bressman (50th), Kady Swanson (75th), Ashton Larabee (79th) and Lauren Shoffner (80th).
The other Pioneer boys' results included: Greg Flores (28th), Josh Camerena (57th), Ben Richardson (60th), Rapael Tate (65th), Josh McMillin (67th), Jonathan Opila (71st) and Matt Marengo (74th).
Leavenworth will participate in the Carl Owczarzak Classic Saturday.
