  • An unemployment report released Wednesday by the Kansas City Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that the unemployment rate in Leavenworth County continued to decline in August this year. The results were announced in a report on 372 metropolitan areas in the United States. The report included data for the for the Kansas City metropolitan area and for its constituent counties. A national report was released early last month. The unemployment rate in Leavenworth County in August 2012 declined to 6.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted. That’s down from July this year, when unemployment was measured at 7.7 percent. Compared to 8.1 percent measured a year ago, the unemployment rate was down 1.3 percent for Leavenworth County. It’s the lowest rate recorded in any of the last 12 months, though the BLS said because the August figures were not seasonally adjusted, the rate is better compared to that from the same month a year ago. Powering that reduction locally were job gains in sectors like professional services and leisure and hospitality, according to Jacqueline Michael-Midkiff, regional economist for the BLS office in Kansas City. Overall, the Kansas City metropolitan area added 13,300 jobs to nonfarm employment rolls, or a 1.4 percent increase, compared to August 2011. Contrast that with trends from the national employment report for August released at the beginning of September, in which the reduction in the national rate, the BLS said, had as much to do people leaving the workforce as with jobs being added. “The number of unemployed declined more than the number who dropped out of the labor force,” here, Michael-Midkiff said, adding that those leaving the labor force also includes those who leave in order to retire.
