  • The University of Saint Mary women's soccer team began its conference season on the right foot Wednesday.
After falling behind to host Bethany 1-0 in the first half, the Lady Spires compiled two unanswered goals to reap a 2-1 victory. USM, 5-3-2 overall, is now 1-0 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
"We were definitely the better team on the day I felt and were just unlucky to be down the goal at half," USM coach Justin Seever said. "It was a sound defensive effort and good to get started off with a conference win."
The home Swedes booted in the first goal 23 minutes into match. However, Saint Mary stabilized and coming out of the break, Jennifer Nye delivered the Lady Spires' equalizer in the 55th minute.
Nearly 16 minutes later in the 72nd minute, Sofia Coelho poked in the game's winning strike with just seven minutes remaining in regulation.
The match was a defensive battle as USM was outshot 4-3. Saint Mary keeper Lindsay Davis made three saves on four shots.
The teams combined for 20 fouls. The Lady Spires will host Bethel Sunday at 1 p.m.
