  • The U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth has returned to normal operations after going on lockdown this past weekend, a prison spokesman said.
USP Thomas Sheldrake said the lockdown officially ended this afternoon.
He said the federal prison was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure Saturday after there were three fights in one of the housing units and two large groups assembled on the recreation yard.
No staff members were injured. A small number of inmates were said to have suffered minor injuries.
Inmates initially remained secured in their cells during the lockdown, but Wednesday they were allowed to go to other areas within their housing units.
Sheldrake said inmates were allowed out of their units for meals this morning. But they were fed one housing unit at a time. He said inmates went to their work assignments this afternoon.
Sheldrake said the return to normal operations means people will be able to visit inmates Friday. Visiting generally takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But visitation was suspended over the weekend when the prison went on lockdown status.
About dozen inmates have been placed in the prison’s special housing for what Sheldrake characterized as immature behavior in connection to the events that led to the lockdown.
The lockdown affected only the main prison on the USP grounds. The neighboring camp maintained normal operations during the lockdown.
