Cyclist rear-ends van

A bicyclist was taken to the hospital after he crashed into the back of a van Wednesday in Leavenworth, a police spokesman said.

The cyclist's injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police Lt. Kevin Crim said officers believe the 54-year-old Leavenworth man may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.

The crash was reported at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Marion Street.

The man was traveling west on a bicycle. He was behind a van.

The driver of the van slowed to turn into a private drive. The cyclist apparently didn't slow down and struck the van, according to Crim.

The bicyclist was transported to Saint John Hospital.

Crim said a person who was traveling on a bicycle cannot charged with driving under the influence. But the person could be charged with being a pedestrian under the influence if he was intoxicated.

The lieutenant said police plan to follow up on the case to try to determine if the cyclist was intoxicated.
