  • Inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth were allowed out of their cells Wednesday but they were confined to their housing units as a lockdown remained in effect, a prison spokesman said.
“We are progressing,” USP spokesman Thomas Sheldrake said.
The federal prison has been on lockdown since Saturday afternoon. Sheldrake said the prison was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure after there had been three fights in one of the housing units and two large groups assembled on the recreation yard.
Sheldrake said the incidents were quickly contained. No staff members were injured. A small number of inmates were suffered minor injuries, which did not require outside medical treatment.
USP officials have been looking into the incidents, which Sheldrake said appear to have been isolated.
Inmates initially were confined to their cells as a result of the lockdown. Sheldrake said allowing them to other areas of their housing units Wednesday gave inmates access to showers, phones and email.
The lockdown has affected only the main prison on the USP grounds. The neighboring camp has maintained normal operations.
