Volleyball roundup: Lady Pioneers trounce Lady Vikings
- Pleasant Ridge wins one at Jackson Heights; Saint Mary defeated by Bethel
Playing well was not good enough for the Leavenworth volleyball team Thursday. The Lady Pioneers wanted a victory — and got it.
Facing Shawnee Mission West, LV rebounded after a poor first set to beat the Lady Vikings 7-25, 25-22, 25-23. Leavenworth then went toe-to-toe with host Lawrence Free State before losing 17-25, 22-25.
“They played like the team I knew they could play like tonight,” Lady Pioneers coach Josh Padilla said. “They were talking, fighting, hustling and it was just awesome seeing them out there.”
Leavenworth, 6-16, will compete in the DeSoto Tournament Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
“Even in the game they lost, they played great,” Padilla said. “They didn’t lose that game, they were beat by a better team. That is a lot better than letting something you want slip away.”
Shuffled lineup delivers PR win
Still dealing with injuries and sickness, the Pleasant Ridge volleyball team continued to try and find the right combination Thursday.
During that effort, the Lady Rams beat Jackson Heights 25-16, 25-20 before losing to Perry 25-19, 27-25.
“We ran a 5-1 with Brook Wagner setting them all up and to see both sides of our court get so involved was really great,” PR coach Amy Bergman said. “Abby Reed did amazing on the back row as well.”
Ashten Langley racked up four aces, four blocks and 10 kills while Jordan Adams recorded 19 kills and two blocks. Kelsey Carpenter managed four blocks while Lauren Zule added three.
PR, 9-12, will play in the Atchison Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.
USM can’t keep up winning ways
Two days after snapping a six-game losing streak, the University of Saint Mary volleyball team suffered a set back.
Hosting Bethel Thursday, the Lady Spires lost in straight sets by the same score in each game — 25-18.
USM, 3-6 in league and 7-13 overall, will play at 7 p.m. Monday in Ottawa.
