A Leavenworth man was taken to the hospital after he was hit by a van Thursday afternoon, a police spokesman said.
The accident was reported at 5:12 p.m. Thursday at Broadway and Metropolitan Avenue.
The 50-year-old man was walking west on the sidewalk that runs along the south side of Metropolitan Avenue. A 2005 Chevrolet Astro was traveling north on Broadway.
“Both the van and pedestrian stopped (at the intersection) and then proceeded at the same time,” said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
The front grill of the van struck the man, knocking him to the ground.
“The pedestrian had a bump on his head,” Nicodemus said.
He was treated at the scene by Leavenworth County EMS personnel and then transported to Cushing Memorial Hospital.
Nicodemus said the man and the van’s driver, a 34-year-old Lansing man, apparently made eye contact after stopping and each assumed the other was yielding.
The deputy chief said the pedestrian had the right of way but no citations were issued.
