Self-inflicted mistakes continue to haunt the Pleasant Ridge football team.
After battling Valley Falls for nearly four quarters Friday, the Rams found themselves on the doorstep of a touchdown late in regulation.
"We were driving to tie it, but could have won depending on the extra point since they were just up six," PR coach Pat McCollim said. "We were running the ball at will, but because the clock got in involved and we tried to throw a pass. They got an interception and returned it for a touchdown."
The turnover was the Rams third of the night inside its opponents 20-yard line, and put the final nail in the coffin of a 42-28 defeat.
"We are a good, solid football team, but I would say in at least two of our four losses, we have beat ourselves," McCollim said.
To start the game, Valley Falls took the kickoff 98 yards and rushed in the final two-yards a play later. By quarter's end, the visitors had built a 14-6 advantage.
Yet in the second, PR bounced back and thanks two touchdowns, went into the half tied at 22 with the Dragons. The third quarter saw both teams tally a touchdown leading to the decisive fourth, where the visitors struck first.
That led to the late game drive by Pleasant Ridge, which due to the clock, had to get out of its usual run-heavy offense and chuck the ball. An interception followed and that was the game.
"Defensively in the first half they were moving the ball at will," the PR coach said. "We made some adjustments at halftime that worked. We really could've taken control in the second half, but we fumbled twice in their redzone. We could have gone up two scores if not one, but those type of mistakes make it hard to overcome."
Blake Graham rushed for 120 yards on 15 carries while Riley Camp recorded 79 yards rushing.
Pleasant Ridge, 2-4, will travel to Silver Lake Friday to open up its district play. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
"I think as long as we protect the ball, we can beat anybody," McCollim said. "We just need to minimize the mistakes."
