  • While two political signs were reported stolen last week in the county, officials say there haven’t been many problems so far this political season.
Two signs were stolen Friday from property on Easton Road south of County Road 13.
Burdel Welsh, a Democrat running for Leavenworth County sheriff, is listed in a report from the Sheriff’s Office as one of the victims because he had placed one of the missing signs on the property. The other sign had been paid for by the man who owns the property.
Undersheriff Ron Cranor said he hasn’t heard of any other political sign thefts in unincorporated areas of the county.
“That’s the only one that’s come to my attention,” he said.
Lt. Sean Goecke with the Leavenworth Police Department said he hasn’t heard of any sign thefts in the city so far this season.
He said it has happened in the past. But it’s been his experience that the thefts are not necessarily politically motivated. He said it’s been more of an issue of children playing a joke — stealing a number of signs and then placing them all in one person’s yard.
Cranor said signs also may disappear if people put them in the wrong place. He said, for example, the Kansas Department of Transportation removes signs that have been placed in right of ways.
