  • The 28 blocks of downtown Leavenworth will be havens of activity this weekend with the announcement of a number of fall events. Events begin at 8 a.m. Saturday morning at Haymarket Square, Seventh and Cherokee streets, with the last Haymarket Flea Market of the season. That same day, the Leavenworth Main Street Program is hosting its “Second Saturdays” this weekend downtown with the theme “Fall into Leavenworth” with seasonal sales and new items. “There will be some seasonal sales and some new merchandise,” said Wendy Scheidt, Main Street’s executive director. There will be two celebrations later that night — the first, starting at 5 p.m. and lasting until midnight, is Tampico’s 10th anniversary celebration. The Mexican restaurant located at 215 Delaware will host a customer appreciation with a tent outside featuring live music, standup comedy, prizes and food and drink specials. Customers can also take part in an $11 all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s not the only event that night. Scheidt said Main Street volunteer Maryann Neeland has for the second time headed up an effort to organize the “Witches Ball.” She said there have been a few changes to the format of the adult-oriented outdoor costume party this year. “There’s no admission, so that’s good news,” Scheidt said. The event, Scheidt said, will feature tarot card readings and other “interesting vendors,” costume contests, a DJ and dancing and food and drink booths. “We want them to come hungry,” she said. Among the vendors will be Topeka-based Ghost Tours of Kansas, who will be leaving the ball from its booth every 30 minutes for an hourlong tour of the supposedly haunted sites in the city. Scheidt said guests from Leavenworth’s sister city of Omihachiman, Japan, will also be on hand for the ball. The vendors will be having their own contest, for best decorated booth. The Main Street promotions committee will be hosting a live witches hat auction during the event. Like the Second Saturday event earlier in the day, Scheidt said the Witches Ball, scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Haymarket Square is a way to draw visitors to Leavenworth. “It’s a fun way to come down and explore downtown,” she said.
