Mary Ellen Junk, 93, formerly of Leavenworth, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Sunrise of Lenexa. She was born Oct. 8, 1919, in Maryville, Mo., the daughter of William "Earl" and Helen Rose (Walsh) Howard.
On June 20, 1946, she married John Alois Junk in Maryville, Mo. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1992. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Ray, Art and Kenny Howard; and a sister, Dorothy Malchow.
Mary Ellen is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Michael and Pam Junk of Lenexa, Kan.; two granddaughters, Lesleigh M. (Tolga) Cetinguc and Katie E. (Garrett) Drake; a brother, Ron (Lisa) Howard; and two sisters, Dolores (Al) List and Nancy (Mike) Muessig O'Connor.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church and Altar Society, Eagles, Federal Prison Guard Retirees. She enjoyed playing with her bridge club, caring for her beloved dogs and volunteering at the local schools and assistance center.
Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church or Leavenworth Assistance Center.
