  • A water main project will cause traffic restrictions for at least a week at Fourth and Shawnee streets, according to city and Leavenworth Water Department officials.
The road closures went into effect today. Fourth Street is reduced to one lane for northbound traffic between Delaware and Shawnee streets.
Shawnee Street is closed at Fourth Street for westbound and eastbound traffic.
John Kaufman, general manager for the Water Department, said people can still access the front of the Leavenworth Post Office on Shawnee Street from Third Street.
The Post Office parking lot also will remain accessible from Fourth Street.
Work is not expected to affect water usage.
Kaufman said the Water Department is replacing a water main located under Shawnee Street that was installed in 1882. He said the work is being performed in phases.
"We're only going to do this when the weather is good, and we're only going to do a block at a time," he said.
