  • To the editor:
I have heard that since animal control made some changes, cats were just thrown out to the streets and would no longer be picked up, all because there is no place to put them.
Consequently, the cats are free game for cat haters, bird lovers and people who love to watch their dogs shred a cat. Sound familiar? Much like throwing the fox to the hounds. The fox doesn't have a chance and neither does a cat.
At my house you will find bird houses, bird feeders, squirrel feeders and three fountains. At my front door is a dish of dry cat food, also at my deck and patio in back. My backyard has chain link. My cats have always been kept in,, but inevitably a stray will adopt me. I refused to not feed it and my fountains have heaters in water.
Is there a similarity between those who watch dogs fight or roosters fight and those who watch a dog kill a cat? When I see a dog on a long leash way ahead of the owner, my heart sinks. Very possibly the majority of those dog walkers are innocent. But I am wary of those walking after dark, hiding their blood thirst.
A final note is actually a reminder. There is, I heard, a place to get your cat or dog spayed or neutered. Remember, a free-roaming cat could be hit by a car, mutilated by mean persons or entertainment for dog walkers.
Also, if your dog is left out, remember to supply food, water and a place to be warmed or cooled. If you do not want a dog or cat in your house, don't get a pet.
