  • To the editor:
Now that the election is over, I felt I had to write this letter about PACs. Bluestem, Kansas Republican Party, Kansas Democratic Party, Americans for Prosperity, Kansas Chamber of Commerce PAC, and many others are all the same. They sent out millions of dollars in mailers and TV and radio ads across the state – both sides, Democrat and Republican.
Many of these contained exaggerations and inaccuracies, almost all were attack ads. I remember not that long ago when attack ads were in poor taste – when those brave souls who ran for office were respected. The Kansas candidates work hard for jobs that pay very little, and have a very large impact on us. Whether you won or lost, thank you for running.
Candidates used to have control of their own campaigns. Then laws were changed to allow PACs to spend unlimited funds to lobby on behalf of candidates. And, candidates are not allowed (by law) to know the content of these ads before they are mailed. Again, PACs do not have to reveal who or what funds them. That is really scary.
When I pick up my mail, I throw out the PAC ads and only read the ads paid for and approved by the candidate. I imagine others did the same.
The election funding laws need to be changed back. I heard that this year, just the presidential campaigns cost over 6 billion dollars, a lot of money coming from PACs. Wouldn't it be nice if that could be used to pay down the national debt!
