  • Fleeing suspect causes wreck, attempts break-in

  • Lansing authorities arrested a man Tuesday who allegedly caused an accident while being pursued by police. The man then allegedly fled on foot and tried a break into a nearby home, a police spokesman said.

  • Lansing authorities arrested a man Tuesday who allegedly caused an accident while being pursued by police. The man then allegedly fled on foot and tried a break into a nearby home, a police spokesman said.
    Authorities are still looking for two people who are believed to have fled from the suspect's vehicle, according to Lansing police Capt. Ben Ontiveros.
    The incident began shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday on Main Street. Ontiveros said a Lansing police officer attempted to stop a make a traffic stop for speeding.
    "The car didn't stop," Ontiveros said.
    He said the car's driver, who has been identified as a 19-year-old Leavenworth man, turned onto 4-H Road, heading west. The driver then tried to make a right turn onto DeSoto Road.
    The car collided with a vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign on DeSoto Road.
    The 19-year-old man then allegedly "took off on foot," according to Ontiveros.
    The captain alleged the suspect forced open the door of a nearby residence but was apprehended by a police officer.
    Ontiveros said it turned out the man had no driver's license and there were warrants for his arrest. The man was arrested for the warrants as well as mutiple alleged traffic violations and burglary.
    Ontiveros said there were three passengers in the suspect's vehicle, and one of them drove the car away from the scene, heading north.
    The vehicle was located a short distance away on DeSoto Road. One passenger, a 20-year-old Leavenworth woman, was still in the car.
    The other two passengers had fled on foot.
    "We were unable to locate them," Ontiveros said.
    The woman who had remained in the vehicle is not believed to have been the person who drove the car away from the scene. She was not taken into custody.
    Ontiveros said officers haven't had contact with the other two passengers but one of them has been identified as a 25-year-old Leavenworth woman.
    The 19-year-old suspect who was taken into custody suffered a possible injury in the crash, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
    The KHP investigated the accident.
    The driver of the other vehicle, a 40-year-old Leavenworth woman, suffered an injury. She was taken to Saint John Hospital, according to the KHP report.
