  • The Leavenworth Police Department’s tactical team responded to a residence Wednesday night where a man allegedly held his ex-girlfriend hostage, a police spokesman said.
The 19-year-old suspect eventually surrendered to officers, and his ex-girlfriend was said to be OK.
Authorities were notified of the incident shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday. Police received a call from a friend of the 22-year-old victim.
“(The victim) reported to the friend that she was being held hostage by her ex-boyfriend at her apartment,” said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
The victim also reportedly told her friend that she was being threatened with a handgun.
Police responded to the victim’s residence in the 500 block of Chestnut Street. Nicodemus said police could see a man through a window.
“He would not come out or respond to officers,” Nicodemus said.
Members of the Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team were called to the scene as well as a negotiator.
About 90 minutes after officers had arrived on the scene, police were able to make contact with the suspect on a cell phone.
“And he surrendered without incident,” Nicodemus said.
The suspect was arrested for allegations of kidnapping, aggravated assault, an aggravated weapons violation, domestic battery and
    criminal damage to property.
Nicodemus said police recovered the handgun that is alleged to have been used by the suspect.
The suspect allegedly had kicked in a back door to enter the residence. Nicodemus said the ordeal had lasted at least several hours before police were contacted.
Nicodemus said the victim was not injured.
