A woman was taken to the hospital after she was struck by a minivan this morning outside of the Leavenworth Walmart store, a police spokesman said.

The incident was reported at 9:37 a.m. today at one of the entrances to the store, which is located at 5000 10th Ave.

A 48-year-old Leavenworth man had pulled up to the entrance in a 1998 Dodge Caravan to drop off his two daughters. He decided to back up so he could pull into a parking stall, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

"He didn't see anyone behind him," Nicodemus said, but the van backed into a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 49-year-old Fort Leavenworth woman, was knocked to the ground. She hit the back of her head, receiving a laceration that required staples, according to Nicodemus.

She also had an abrasion on her knee.

The woman was taken to the hospital by Leavenworth County EMS.
