  • The annual Holiday Lighted Parade and Mayor's Tree Lighting are scheduled for Friday in downtown Leavenworth. And there will be some changes to the events this year.
The location of the Mayor's Tree Lighting has been moved to Haymarket Square, which is located at Seventh and Cherokee streets. And the tree lighting and parade will be held on a Friday instead of a Saturday.
The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The tree lighting will start after the parade.
Melissa Bower, public information officer for the city of Leavenworth, said Haymarket Square will provide protection from possible inclement weather during the tree lighting ceremony. She said the location also is conveniently located near downtown businesses where people can shop the night of the event.
"They're not going to have fireworks this year," she said.
Fireworks have followed the tree lighting in the past.
But there will be a European-style outdoor market at Haymarket Square.
And as in the past, the tree lighting program will include entertainment.
The route for the Holiday Lighted Parade, which is sponsored by the Leavenworth Main Street Program, also will be different this year.
Wendy Scheidt, Leavenworth Main Street's executive director, said the parade will start at Third and Delaware streets and move west on Delaware to Seventh Street. The parade then will head south on Seventh Street to Cherokee Street.
She said the parade will pause as dignitaries are dropped off at Haymarket Square. The parade then will proceed east on Cherokee Street, ending at Fourth Street.
The theme for this year's parade, which will feature lighted floats, is "Winter Wonderland."
Scheidt anticipates there will be about 20 entries in the parade including a school band, something that hasn't been featured in the event for a while.
Scheidt said the parade and tree lighting will coincide with a Holiday Open House, which also is sponsored by the Leavenworth Main Street Program.
    The Holiday Open House is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 1.
"It's a lot of fun downtown," Scheidt said.
She said 31 downtown merchants are participating in the Holiday Open House. They will have luminaries in front of their businesses Friday night.
Scheidt said people will be able to ride a trolley Friday night.
A company also will be offering carriage rides Friday and Dec. 1. There will be a charge for the carriage rides.
The open house also will feature Santa Claus, who will arrive in downtown Leavenworth in the parade. Children will be able to mail their letters to Santa at Dad’s Trains and Toys, 417 Delaware St.
Other events are planned for that weekend including the city's annual Breakfast with Santa, which will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Dec. 1 at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade. There will be a fee charged for this event.
Page 2 of 2 - There also will be Rudolph's Red Nose Run, which will start at noon Dec. 1 at High Noon Saloon, 206 Choctaw St. Visit the website enter2run.com for more information.
St. Paul Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a German Christmas Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Riverfront Community Center.
    C.W. Parker Carousel Museum, 320 S. Esplanade, will be sponsoring its annual Children's Small Mall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 1 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2.
