The holiday break must have took its toll on the University of Saint Mary men’s basketball team.
A sluggish start from the Spires in its first game since before Thanksgiving eventually led to a blowout loss. USM fell 73-55 to Peru State College Tuesday.
“It was a completely uninspired effort in our part by our team tonight,” USM coach Jon Bishop said. “We are heading into league play this week and we are a bad team right now.”
The loss was the second time this season Saint Mary has fallen to PSU. The game began poorly for the Spires, but the team battled back to cut the deficit to single digits by half time.
The rally continued into the second half, where USM actually took a lead at one point in time. But it couldn’t sustain the success and eventually the hosts ran away from its visitors.
Saint Mary, 4-5 overall, opens Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play Thursday with a 8 p.m. game at Bethel College.
