  • In it’s opening meet of the 2012-13 season, the Leavenworth boys’ swim team put up some encouraging times according to its coach.
“We had a lot of kids that hadn’t swam before so it was nice to get them into the water,” Pioneer coach Willis Willmeth said. “Some of the older kids stepped up and swam faster than last year. Some of the new guys stepped up and swam well tonight, so it was just encouraging.”
While official results from the Lawrence Free State Invite, which included Lawrence High and Shawnee Mission South, were unavailable due to computer difficulties, Willmeth did highlight several Pioneer performers.
Josh Camerena swam Leavenworth’s fastest 50 freestyle and also had the quickest time among the Leavenworth relay participants, while Landry Hodges posted the second fastest 50 free mark.
Carsten Defore improved upon his 500 free time from last year as did Hunter Higgins in the backstroke. In fact, Higgins’ backstroke time was a personal best and just four seconds off a state qualify time.
In the breaststroke, Ryan Hill recorded a personal record and was also just four seconds off a state time.
“We had some kids do some really good stuff,” Willmeth said. “Both Hunter Higgins and Ryan Hill are just short of state times. We will have to switch up our relays a little bit because we had some kids frankly swim faster than others, and that is a good thing.”
Leavenworth is right back in the pool this afternoon when it travels to Shawnee Mission West. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
