The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Mary Aloys Powell, 85, who died on Nov. 22, 2012 at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, KS.
Mary Elizabeth Powell was born on August 23, 1927 in Maple Hill, Kansas, to John A. and Elizabeth Hansan Powell. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School, St. Marys, KS, and entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on February 12, 1946. As Sister Mary Aloys, she made her profession of vows on February 15, 1948.
Sister Mary Aloys received her RN from St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings, MT. After serving ten years, usually as a night supervisor or a supervisor in obstetrics in various hospitals in the SCL Health System, she earned a Master's degree in Hospital Administration from St. Louis University. She served in an administrative capacity in the system hospitals from 1961-1992. In 1993, Sister Mary Aloys began her years of service with the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation in Denver, Co. She retired to Ross Hall in March of this year.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs. Mildred (Edward) Powell, The Dalles, OR; nieces, nephews, friends, and her SCL community.
A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3.
