Full details on Leavenworth's winter sports recreational sign-ups and the High Noon Saloon’s Rudolph’s Red-Nosed Run
For your reading enjoyment, musings galore...
What a great set of games in adult women’s volleyball this past Monday.
The Six Pack (Kim Todd Rhoades) won the most exciting set of the season as they defeated the Dominators (Ruth Striggow) 2-1. The game scores were 25-19, 16-25, 17-15.
The win moved Six Pack a half game out of third place. Boom (Sherry Schwinn) defeated the Misfits (Lona Lanter) to remain in second place just two games out of first place.
The High Noon Saloon’s Rudolph’s Red-Nosed Run is getting closer. On Saturday, we will be running the 7.2 “Tuff Miles” course.
At this point, we are looking forward to hosting approximately 125 runners from as far away as Madison, Ala., and Omaha, Neb. The weather forecast at this time is a balmy 64 degrees.
Our volunteers were concerned how they were going to stay warm as they stood around for two hours. Actually, Billy Daniels was talking about sitting in his easy chair on the VA Center grounds as he awaits the runners.
Hearing that, I hope none of the others bring a cooker along.
Packet pick-up will be today from 4-7 p.m. at High Noon; or, Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
Late entries are being accepted at the Riverfront Community Center today from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on race day at High Noon Saloon.
The entry fee is $35.
Please get out and support our recreation programs. On Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 I want to encourage everyone to visit and dine at the Lansing IHOP.
On those two days, the ownership of the local IHOP is donating a percentage of the proceeds to the Leavenworth and Lansing Parks and Recreation Departments.
Please get out on those days to assist IHOP in supporting our children. I will be there twice a day at least — anyone want to meet me there for lunch?
I want to thank everyone who supported our jazz concert last Saturday evening. It was a great show and even better crowd.
Our coaches’ meeting for youth basketball was yesterday. If you have not heard from a coach by Monday morning, please feel free to call me and find out who your child’s coach is and their contact information.
Practices will begin the next week and games will begin on Jan. 12.
The registration deadline for adult men’s basketball has been extended to Dec. 11 8 p.m. Teams may not sign-up after this date.
Games will be played on Thursdays at this point. If we get more than nine teams, we will select, as a league, a second playing day. Games will begin the week of Jan. 7.
Just a reminder — all players must be 18 years of age and their high school class must have graduated.
Don’t forget the bitty ball, 3-5 year olds who are not in the first grade, sign-up is ongoing.
The deadline for the bitty ball sign-up is Dec. 14. Late registration will not be accepted. Again, I share that coach Derek Zeck and the Leavenworth High School girls’ basketball coaching staff will be conducting this program.
The clinics will be held on four consecutive Saturdays beginning Jan. 12.
Adult women’s volleyball winter league sign-up is ongoing as well.
We hope to grow from the current five-team league to an eight-team league in the upcoming winter season. All players must be 18 years of age and their high school class must have graduated.
There is an exciting opportunity for all of our basketball youth looking to gain a few pointers.
On Dec. 8, University of Saint Mary men’s basketball coach Jon Bishop and his staff and players will be offering a basketball clinic for boys and girls ages 3-14.
For additional information, contact coach Bishop at 913-758-6311 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
