  • The unemployment rate in Leavenworth climbed slightly in October, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Kansas City office. The unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, ticked up from 6 percent in September to 6.2 percent in October. But compared to the rate from the same time a year ago, which economists say is a more accurate means of comparison, the unemployment rate is down 1.5 percent in Leavenworth County, from 7.7 percent in October 2011. The Kansas City metropolitan area as a whole saw unemployment rates increase slightly as well, from 6.1 percent in September to 6.2 percent in October. Over the year, unemployment fell from 7.5 to 6.2 percent for the area. Though the same as the regional average, Leavenworth County’s unemployment rate is above that of the state as a whole, which reported an unemployment rate of 5.2 percent, down slightly from 5.3 percent in September and 6.2 percent a year ago. Kansas gained about 4,100 jobs since a year ago, the BLS reported. The national unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in October 2012, not seasonally adjusted, and 7.9 percent seasonally adjusted.
