  • What looked like a lopsided win at half quickly became a nail-biter for the Lansing boys’ basketball team.
The Lions traveled to Shawnee Heights Tuesday where they held a 27-14 advantage heading into the third quarter.
But a furious rally by the Thunderbirds made for an interesting ending.
Up 43-40, Lansing missed two front ends of one-and-one free throw opportunities, allowing Heights hope for an equalizer as the final buzzer rang.
However, the Thunderbirds’ tying shot bounced off the rim and went flaying to the right, letting the Lions escape with the three-point win.
“Not a real solid game for us,” Lansing coach Rod Briggs said. “We were even behind 36-34 at one time, but got it back. Still, a win is a win and you should always be happy about winning.”
Joe Schneider led the team in scoring with 13 points followed by Clay Young with 11 and Khalil Bailey had eight. Briggs highlighted Lucas Mein for some big plays down the stretch as well.
Lansing, 2-0, hosts Topeka Seaman Friday at 7:15 p.m.
    Atchison runs over Rams
The fresh-faced Pleasant Ridge boys’ basketball team took its lumps Tuesday, losing 77-23 at home to Atchison.
“We have to get to the point where we can play together, and we will have our growing pains, and that’s how it will be for a while,” said PR coach Sean Murphy. “They [Atchison] had their lumps, and now we’re having ours.”
Nick Holmes led the Rams with seven points. Sean Spurlock dropped in six.
The Rams head to Kansas City Christian Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
